About Capt. Nathaniel Austin

"Capt. Nathaniel Austin was the son of Nathaniel Austin and Abigail Hovey. Born in Suffield, Hampshire, MA, he married Agnes Adams there on 16 May 1732. They had children Gad, Phenix, Diadama, John, Joab, Levi, Judah, Elijah, and Mary. Nathaniel served in the Revolutionary War and signed "Declaration Against Great Britain" in 1773. He died Apr. 13, 1777 and is buried in Sheffield Plain Cemetery. The cemetery is located north of Sheffield on Hwy. 7, on the left side of the road, south of Cook Rd." - FindAGrave online site (

"In 1773 Captain Nathaniel Austin signed the "Declaration Against Great Britain". He was also a delegate from Sheffield to the Berkshire County Convention which convened in Stockbridge, MA on July 6, 1774, and where the Convention (or Congress) advised the inhabitants not to consume products of British manufacturers. He was on the committee that made a report to the residents of the town at a meeting held on June 18, 1776 which after adoption, resolved to take up arms.
