About Nathaniel Baker

Nathaniel Baker Sr.
BIRTH 1679, Hull, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA
DEATH 7 May 1750 (aged 70–71), Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA
BURIAL Cobb's Hill Cemetery East and West, Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA, MEMORIAL ID 66587430

Nathaniel Baker, s. of Samuel Baker and Fear Robinson (Isaac,1 Rev. John,A John,B), b. on or after May 8, 1679 at Hull, at the time part of Suffolk but now in Plymouth, County, Mass. He d. of record May 7, 1679 at Barnstable, Mass., Æ 71. Although his gravestone was transcribed prior to 1900 the stone no longer exists.

Nathaniel has a confused set of vital records in the G.A. Hinckley annotation of the Barnstable Town Records [Records of Barnstable, Massachusetts, NEHGS CD, 2002], which is one and the same as the NEHGS' on-line version. On the other hand, the correct 1901 transcription of the Barnstable VRs by Bowman [Mayflower Descendant (3:72)] mirror the original handwritten town record [1:398].

By late 1705, Nathaniel m. 1) prob. at Hull, Mass., Mercy Binney, dau. of John Binney and wife Mercy (q.v. Marcy), b. of record Dec. 15, 1682 at Hull. She d. Mar. 9, 1717/8 at Barnstable, Mass. However, her death is confused in the G.A. Hinckley annotation with the death of Nathaniel's 2nd wife, Mercy Lumbert, who he had yet to marry - "his wife Mercy Baker [Lumbart, wid. Shobel Lewis] Dec'd 9 of March 1718."

On Jan. 5, 1718/9 at the Barnstable First Church (by Rev. Jonathan Russel), Nathaniel m. 2) Mercy Lumbert, eldest recorded child of Jonathan Lumbert and Hopestill Bullock, and widow of Shubael Lewis ("Shobal Lewes" in Barnstable town and probate records). She was b. Mar. 16, 1684/5 at Barnstable and named in her father's Barnstable will dated Oct. 23, 1724, which names all of his daus. only by their first names without regard to married surname - "I give to my daughter Mercy Ten pounds, besides what she hath already rec'd."

Following the 1725 division of the Barnstable Church into the East and West Parishes, on Aug. 25, 1725 "Mercy Baker, the wife of Nathanael Baker" was baptized and on the same day "Nathaniel Baker & Mercy his wife" were admitted as members of the newly formed East Parish Church. There is no record of when 2nd wife Mercy died.

Mercy Lumbert m. 1) Shubael Lewis of record at Barnstable Dec. 8, 1703 and he d. intestate prior to Jan. 1718/19 when administration was granted to his brother John. Mercy (Lumbert) Lewis has no recorded children by her 1st marriage and there are no known children by her 2nd marriage to Nathaniel Baker.

The children of Nathaniel Baker and 1st wife Mercy Binney, all b. of record at Barnstable:

• i. Binney Baker, b. Aug. 15, 1705; d. in infancy June 5, 1706.

• ii. Mercy Baker, b. Feb. 4, 1706/7, d. Mar. 4, 1781 at Middleborough, Mass. (g.s.); m. Nov. 7, 1728 at Barnstable, Silvanus Cobb, s. James Cobb & Elizabeth Hallett, b. Nov. 23, 1700 at Barnstable where he d. Sept. 30, 1756 (g.s.). Eight children of the family.

Inscription
From the pre-1900 transcription:

"Here lies buried the body of Nathaniel Baker, died May 7th 1750 in the 71 year of his age."

Consistentent with how age was reported on gravestones prior to the early 1800s, on the day Nathaniel died he was 70 years old and Ætatis (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 71. This indicates he was born on or after May 8, 1679.
