Nathaniel C. Carter manufactured the first machine-made American flag for an Army contract in 1866. In 1872, he removed to California for health reasons, settling first near San Gabriel on the Flores Rancho. In 1881, he purchased the land which he founded as the town of Sierra Madre, Ca. In 1882, he moved his family to the newly founded Sierra Madre.
