Nathaniel Holmes George bricklayer was born in Roxbury Feb 1, 1639 and died there in 1711 probably in February as his will was proved March 12, 1712. He married first Sarah Wiswall daughter of Thomas Wiswall of Dorchester (Hist of Dorchester p 139 and Vviswall Gen p 1). She was baptized 12 mo 1642. She was borne the 19 day of the same mo beinge the Lords Daye in the eaveninge about sunne setinge (Dorchester Church Records p 155) No date of her marriage or death has been found. He married second in Dorchester by Capt Roger Clap Mar 27, 1667 Patience Toplifle born in Dorchester in July 1644 and died in Roxbury Mar 11, 1696, youngest daughter of Clement and Sarah Toplilfe.
He lived in Dorchester after his marriage later returning to Roxbury. Records show him to have been active in public affairs holding several oflices including selectman of Roxbury and representative in the General Court in 1689 In 1664. Nathaniel Holmes signed a petition to England against King Charles's accession to the throne In 1667 and for several years after he was fence viewer the oflice at that time being an important and busy one as there were frequent disputes over boundaries and a great deal of trouble in the trespass of cattle.
He served in King Philip's war going to Mt Hope July 3, 1675 in Capt Hutchinson's company (Bodge's King Philip's War p 93). He lived in Dedham a while probably near Roxbury line afterwards moving to Roxbury.
