Brief overview:

Neels (61), who was recovering from surgery, was fatally shot in the stomach on his smallholding in Roodia, Free State on 11th July 2010. Neels had been discharged from hospital and in bed with his wife when the two perpetrators entered the house.

According to const. Police spokesman Edwin Ntsheo Jansen shot once in the stomach. "The robbers broke down the burglar bars in front of a window at about 04:30 and gained access to the house," Ntsheo said on Thursday. Mrs. Jansen was tied up on the bed next to her husband before she heard a shot go off. Shortly afterwards, still tied up, but still unaware that her husband had been shot dead, she went to show the robbers where they could get money. They demanded money and firearms, among other things.

Mrs. Jansen then saw her bloodied husband lying motionless on the bed. "She initially thought his operative wound was beginning to bleed again, but soon realized he was shot," a family friend, who did not want his name mentioned, said at the murder scene. Mrs. Jansen allegedly asked the robbers if she could help her husband, but was told to leave him. "Don't worry, we have already called the ambulance," one of the robbers, according to a reliable source, replied in English.

The robbers then fled with an unknown amount of money and three cell phones in a vehicle, which was parked outside under the roof of the holding house. Ntsheo confirmed the robbers fled in a white Mazda bakkie, but could not say who the owner of the vehicle was.

The couple's daughter and her son, her two daughters and two friends of her children were visiting the smallholding at the time of the Kimberley attack. It is not known if they were also attacked. "Paramedics rushed to the smallholding, but could only sign the man's death certificate," Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesman, said.

Mrs. Jansen, who was severely traumatized, was treated for shock by her GP. Ntsheo said the robbers in the house talked to other members of the robbery gang outside the holding house on their cell phones. "We are investigating cases of murder and armed robbery," he said. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
