Nelson was the son of James and Nancy Roney. He married Catherine (Kate) Kean around 1873 and they had several children, including Clay A., Harry K., May, Gertrude and Bessie. In the 1880s he was a school teacher. Later he worked as a letter carrier.
During the Civil War, Nelson enlisted in Company G of the 80th Ohio Infantry on February 13, 1862. He was mustered out on February 7, 1865 in Beaufort, South Carolina.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jul 15 2022, 9:41:57 UTC
