Newton became a member of the Church in 1842. His wife, Sarah Jane, joined when he did. She gave him ten children. He married second, Sarah, who gave him seven children, and his third wife, Sarah, gave him two children.
Upon his arrival in Salt Lake, they made their home there for three years before moving to North Ogden, where they lived for nine years. They then moved to Providence in 1859. Newton was made president of the Teacher's Quorum and held that office until 1866, when he was called by Brigham Young to go to Dixie. They lived in Washington, Utah, where he died.
