About Nicholas Butterley
GEDCOM Note
Career and Other Matters
Nicholas and Mary Ann left the Bendigo area about 1876/77 and went to Deniliquin, N.S.W., where he became a tank sinker. Nicholas became the licensee of the Shamrock Hotel, Victoria Street, North Deniliquin in 1878 and continued this role until 1884. The Shamrock Hotel building still existed (as a residence) in 1993. Nicholas and Mary Ann returned to Eaglehawk early in 1883; but good fortune did not accompany them as during that year firstly their youngest son died and shortly after Mary Ann passed away. Nicholas had four surviving children aged 9, 7, 5, and 3. At this stage Nicholas' 70 year old mother Bridget (and possibly his daughter Ria) was living with his married sister Maria Dureau, All four Butterley children were taken into the Dureau household and were raised by that family. Tthey all subsequently moved to Melbourne with the Dureau family (Abt 1890) . Nicholas returned to Deniliquin and he severed his connection with the hotel business in 1884 when John Allen took up the licence. He is recorded owning sheep in late 1888 but his whereabouts from then until the turn of the century are not known. In 1903 he is listed in the South Australian Edition of the Sands and McDougall Directory as being a storekeeper at 10 Sydenham Road, Norwood. It is possible he was living in South Australia prior to this date without having sought an entry in the Directory. When his brother John (AKA James Butterley) died in 1910 the funeral commenced with the collection of James' remains from the same Norwood address. The Annual Directories up to and including 1914 confirm that Nicholas' occupation and address remained unchanged.
