About Nicholas Hubbard

Nicholas Hubbard was born ca. 1778 in Pennsylvania and died in Washington County, Indiana in 1844 around the age of 66.

    He married Barbara Ann Prost ca. 1800 in Orange County, Virginia.  She was born in Washington County, Virginia ca. 1782 and died Jun 18, 1868 in Washington County, Indiana around the age of 86.

Nicholas Hubbard moved with his parents to Frederick County, Maryland about 1790. He moved again with them to Albemarle County, Virginia in 1790, and paid personal property tax there in 1797.
Nicholas Hubord is listed on the 1806 Washington County, Virginia personal tax list, showing one white and one horse.
He was a farmer and blacksmith, and spoke German. He often made gun locks, tomahawks, and butcher knives for the Indians, who outnumbered the whites five to one.
He moved with his parents to Orange County, Virginia about May 1801, and again with them to Washington County, Virginia in 1804, where he was on the tax rolls in 1806.
About Apr 1810, his family and his father's family moved to Washington County, Indiana.
He was appointed administrator of his father's estate on Dec 15, 1814, and inherited part of his father's estate. Deed Book A, pages 408-415, reflects that Nicholas and his siblings filed quit-claim deeds for this property.
In the 1820 census for Indiana, Washington County, (Roll 14, page 210), the Nicholas Hubbard family consisted of one male under 10 (Andrew, 9); two males 10 to 15 (George, 10 and ?); one male 16 to 25 (Nicholas, 18), one male 26 to 44 (Nicholas, 42); three females under 10 (Margaret Ann, 1; Catherine, 7, and ?) one female 10 to 15; one female 16 to 17, one female 16 to 25 (Mary, 18); and one female 26 to 44 (Barbara, 38).
Nicholas was buried in 1844 in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem, Indiana. His wife Barbara Ann Prost Hubbard is buried next to him. From the courthouse, the cemetery is located by going west on West Market Street five blocks to the intersection of Shelby Street, turning left and going .2 mile to the entrance of the cemetery. On a plat map, the cemetery is located in SE 1/4, Section 18, NE 1/4, Section 19, and NW 1/4, Section 40, T2N, R4E.
