About Nicholas Magnus Hanson

From Newspaper Account: "ACCIDENT WAS FATAL -- Death of Nicholas Hanson.

The Well known Stonemason dies from the effect of a blow in the stomach by a crowbar -- was engaged in laying a "Nigger Head" Floor. (Unfortunate terminology.)

Nicholas Hanson, who resided a few miles northeast of Marion and was widely known as a dresser of what is known as "nigger-head" stone, died at 6:30 o'clock Sunday morning from the effects of an injury received on Thursday at the farm of Nicholas Hendrickson, situated one and one-half miles north of Louisa. Hanson had been engaged there in laying the floor of a barn with "nigger-head" stone and while thus employed received the the injury that produced his death. He had placed a crowbar under one of the large stones with the intention of lifting it. He was removed to Hendrickson's house and remained there until his dissolution ensued, he, at no time being in a condition that would permit of removal to his own home near Marion. He was one of the most skillful stonemasons in the county and his services were constantly in demand. The deceased was fifty-four years of age and was born in Ohio, coming to Iowa sixteen years ago and locating upon the land which comprised his farm and homestead. He is survived by his wife and eleven children, three sons and eight daughters, all of whom are at home. Mr. Hanson was a member of the Lodge of Odd Fellows at Marion. He was greatly esteemed as a neighbor and friend and his death will be sincerely regretted by a considerable number of friends. The funeral will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the country home. Rev. Mr. Pye of Marion will officiate,
