Nick's grandfather, Nikola Piantanida was sailor from Orebic. He married Kata Lozica, girl from well known family of artists and sculptors from Lumbarda. Some of them of them, Ivo Lozica and his brother Lujo are well known sculptors. At the age of 51, Nikola suddenly died from stroke, leaving his widow with 6 children.

One of Nikola's brother's went to America, and few years after Nikola's death, 3 of the older children were sent to live with him. They have never seen their mother or siblings again.
