Biography

Nicholas Power, III was born in 1673 in Providence, Rhode Island as the first child of Nicholas Power, II and Rebecca Rhodes.[1][2] He married first, Mary Haile sometime before 1699.[1] His second wife was Mercy Tillinghast, daughter of Pardon Tillinghast, Jr. and Lydia Taber, whom he married about 1699.[1]
As an heir of Nicholas Powers, II, young Nicholas was taxed 4s, 2d (Levy of £25) on 29 Oct 1684.[1] He also inherited 50 acres of land on 12 Dec 1685 from his father that was passed down through his grandfather, Nicholas, I.[1] On 04 Mar 1701 Nicholas bought a house lot in the lower end of Providence from Daniel Williams, the son of Reverend Roger Williams.[1] Nicholas Power, III was a man of considerable importance in the Colony of Rhode Island. He was one of the assistants in the General Assembly of 1720 and Deputy from Providence to the Assembly in 1722.[3] In his will dated 16 Mar 1732, he instructed that 1294 acres of land in Gloucester was to be disposed of.[3] The right of this land was based on the original purchase rights of his grandfather, Nicholas Power, I.
Nicholas died on 18 May 1734 and was buried in the North Burial Ground, Providence, Rhode Island.[4]
