About Nicholas Rideout, I

He settled Falmouth, ME at Back Cove. He came on the ship Chandler from Kent, England. He was a man of very sturdy qualities, which have been inherited by a long line of descendants. He was a shipwright, and was very successful in that work, as well as his son Benjamin. His comfortable home was at Back Cove, Falmouth, ME. In 1737 Nicholas removed to a small place called Augusta, ME - that is now Small Point Harbor in the town of Phippsburg, ME. At that point a fishing settlement had been established in 1716, by the Presumpscot Proprietors. A fort 100 foot square was erected there for the protection of the settlers, and the settlement continued until the fort was destroyed by Indians. In 1737 an effort was made to reestablish this important place. Among those who accompanied Nicholas Rideout to this place were the Hales, Clarks, Wallaces, Wymans, John Doughty, David Gustin, Jerimiah Springer and John Owen. After some time Nicholas is said to have removed to Brunswick, ME on the New Meadows River, opposite the present site of the city of New Bath, ME.

  • **There is a comment that must be made and that is: This cemetery doesn't exsist in any Falmouth records and this is from the Falmouth Historical Society. When Falmouth was settled it was in a 80 square mile radis and although it was refered to as Falmouth it did consist of Portland and about four other communities that made up the Falmouth area. I strongly believe that the Rideouts were ship wainwrights etc so they did settled in Black Cove, which became part of Portland. Therefore I believe they are all interned in Eastern Cemetery in Portland....LHG.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: May 6 2023, 5:31:04 UTC
