His Dutch name was Claes Severtszen Smit; it was anglicized when he came to CT. (Herbert F. Seversmith, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut). Apparently a carpenter by trade. Came to Milford, CT by October 1662, as recorded by Richard Baldwin (#3782), town clerk, who Anglicized his name. Moved to Huntington, LI about 1682.
