About Nicholas II Spencer, Esq

Nicholas Spencer (1611-1643) of Cople, Bedfordshire

He was baptised 15 Nov 1611 at Cople, Bedfordshire, the son of Nicholas Spencer of Cople by his wife Mary Elmes. He married Mary Gostwick on 20 Jan 1628, the daughter of Edward Gostwick, Bart (d 1630) by his wife Anne Wentworth (d 1633). He died in 1643, and his widow Mary died in 1694 at Cople.

Nicholas Spencer Sr., father of the Virginia emigrant, and his wife, the former Mary Gostwick, second daughter of Sir Edward Gostwick had several sons, of these William inherited the family estates but died childless after making his heir his nephew, also William, son of his next-brother Nicholas who had moved to Virginia.[10] Another brother, Robert Spencer later removed from Surry County, Virginia, to Talbot County, Maryland, where his descendants long lived at Spencer Hall, the family plantation.


The sons of Nicolas Spencer Sr. and the former Mary Gostwick[4], Nicholas Spencer and his brother Robert both emigrated to America in the 1650s, to Virginia and Maryland respectively.[5] Nicholas served as an agent for his cousin, John Colepeper, 1st Baron Colepeper.
