"Jacob s paternal grandfather was a prosperous farmer and small distiller. The fact of his prosperity is the more interesting in the light of the poverty which many Danish farmers experienced in the period after the Napoleonic Wars. His wife has been described as a "little wise fine lady, well-bred" and "she could make verses.* 2 They believed in a good education for their son Niels Edward and set aside a special room in the farm-house where he could study without interruption."
