Nina Margaret Dumond, 97, passed away at her Denton home on October 21, 2017. Born August 20, 1920 to William Cody and Harriet Oakes Cody, an original enrollee the Choctaw Nation,

Nina grew up in a farming community near Hugo, Oklahoma. After graduating at age 15 from Grant High School, Nina moved to Dallas where she lived with her uncle while attending Draughn’s Business School. In 1939 she married James C. Mitchell with whom she had three children. Her husband was away in the military during WWII. A true “Rosie the Riveter”, Nina worked outside the home supporting the war effort. Following the war and a divorce, she raised her children as a determined single mother working as a secretary and bookkeeper.

In 1969 she married Elmer F. Dumond and began a new life as the matriarch of a wonderful blended family. Nina and Elmer made their home in Arlington where they were active in Tate Springs Baptist Church and volunteered many hours for Muscular Dystrophy, Meals on Wheels and Ft. Worth State School. Following the death of her husband and the move of her son James to the Denton State Supported Living Center in 1995, Nina moved to live with family in Denton. She spent many hours as a volunteer at the DSSLC until her health declined. Always compassionate and amazingly selfless, Nina spent more time caring for and concerned with the welfare of others rather than herself.

Loved by all who knew her, Nina will be greatly missed by those whom she left behind.

Nina is survived by children, Carol Fredde of San Antonio; Sandra Parker of Denton; Shelly Dumond Watson (Charles) of Tucson, AZ, Ann Dumond Brubaker (Henry) of Wickenburg, AZ; Bill Dumond of Pflugerville, TX; grandchildren, Sherry Booher, Shelly Hoover, Candace Wimbish, Crystal Mackey, Collette Parker, Leanna Abrams, Lynnette Adams, Allyson Searway, Annette Ridgway, Stacy Anderson, Matthew Dumond, Beth Moody, Robert Dumond, David Dumond, and Debbie Dumond. Nina also left behind 28 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great grandchildren, one nephew and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer Dumond, son James Cody Mitchell, two grandsons and one great grandson.

The family extends a special thanks to her loving caregivers over the past few months: April Moss, Memrie Jenkins, and Sherree Lee.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday October 25 at DeBerry Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday October 26, 2017 in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery, Denton, TX.
