About Noel Graham Salvesen, MBE

Educated at the Edinburgh Academy 1898-1911, Noel was a gold medallist in classics and dux in 1910 and 1911. He was also considered brilliant at rugby. He went on to University College, Oxford.

He joined the 1/7th Battalion of the Royal Scots as 2nd Lieutenant at the start of WWI, and was promoted to captain. The Battalion was ordered to Gallipoli, but Noel was severely injured in the Gretna railway disaster of 22 May 1915, along with nearly half the battalion (including many who were killed). After his recovery he served at Scottish ports as intelligence officer and military control officer until the end of the war.
