Nora Joyce Gevers (1936 - 2004)

Nora (67), from farm Koperbult, Wartburg, KZN was stabbed to death and her throat slit on 16th July 2004.

Thembinkosi Mkwanazi (19), pleaded guilty to the murder, in front of Magistrate Virushka Jamuna. He represented himself, after refusing the services of an attorney paid by the Legal Aid Board. He claimed a dispute about money for flowers which he had sold her, and told the court that on July 16th he went to the Geverses' farm to collect R150 from Norah Gevers. He told the court he stabbed Gevers in the upper part of her left arm. "She cried. I did not know what to do with her and decided that I should kill her. I grabbed her and stabbed her twice. I then cut her neck," said Mkwanazi.

After the confession. Mr. Mark Gevers, Norah's son, screamed at Mkwanazi, jumped over the wooden rail between the public gallery and the dock and tried to grab Mkwanazi.

  • After the guilty plea, Magistrate Jamuna stopped the proceedings and referred the matter to the directorate of public prosecutions for a decision on how to proceed. The matter was adjourned to the following week.
