George John McCauley was born at sea on 10 December 1876 on board the "Jessie Osborne" to 14 year old Martha McCauley. The name Henry E is the name given on his birth inspection (possibly father's first name?). No paternal details are available as he was illegitimate. He was named George John McCauley and raised by his grandfather John McCauley (Snr) and his second wife Mary McCauley (nee Williamson).
