His first name may also have been spelled "Auke" in some sources.

Prior to the Revolutionary War, Oke was an innholder at Hightstown, NJ.  At various times, he lived in Monmouth, MIddlesex and Mercer Cos., NJ

During the Revolutionary War, he was a surgeon in the war and served with the 3rd Battallion of Middlesex County, New Jersey, commanded by Major Robert Nixon.

According to the book "Hendrickson's of NY, NJ & PA" by Marie McConnell, he is also listed in the records as a "horseman", and his son Daniel is said to have related stories of riding behind him on his horse while he ministered to the wounded.

For services rendered during the war, he was given 3,617 1/2 acres of land in Mason and Lewis County, Kentucky (Jilsons land grants).

On his pensioner applications, he used the name Oke.

When he went to Kentucky, he went to a station near where Maysville now stands, and from there to Lewis County.

The Lewis County court met at Oke's home at Poplar Flat for about two years before Clarksburg was officially selected as the county seat. He donated a tract of land and laid out a proposed village named Mt. Vernon, but the court voted to move to Clarksburg anyway
