About Olive Barre
Her birth name is EATON, not BERRY. Philip Berry (and other variants) was her last husband.
Olive Eaton had a rather complicated love life. Deserted by her first husband, Edward (not George) Lane, she promptly married again - and again.
Olive was named as a headright on 13 September 1641 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as Olive Eaton on a certificate granted to Mr. William Andrews for 750 acres of land for transporting 15 persons into the colony.
She married Edward Lane circa 1642 at Northampton County, VA. They had four children:
- George Lane+1 b. c 1642
- Olive Lane1 b. c 1644
- Alice 'Ellis' Lane+1 b. c 1646, d. b 23 Apr 1724
- William Lane1 b. c 1648
Edward Lane decamped for England circa 1652, leaving Olive and the four children to fend for themselves.
Olive lost no time in finding a new protector - possibly more than one. She is recorded as having two daughters, Margaret and Mary, by Nicholas Ivery, marriage date uncertain. On 29 January 1655, Ollive Poulton (formerly the wife of Edward Leene, tanner) gave deed of gift to her children George and Ollive Leene and to Margaret her youngest daughter. (Notes: William Leene is the son of Edward Leene. Ollive Leene is the sister of George Leene.)
MARGARET IVERY
b. 27 Jul 1654, Hungars Parish, Northampton Co VA (her birth recorded in Somerset Co MD Liber IKL, which also names her father, Nicholas Ivery).
3. MARY IVERY
b. 5 Feb 1656/7 at Masheponge, Northampton Co VA (her birth recorded in Somerset Co Liber IKL, which names her as a daughter of Nicholas Ivery).
Where, and how, Mr. Poulton figures into this is not clear; at all events, there were no (acknowledged) children by him.
Nicholas Ivery apparently died before 1660, because Olive is next heard of as the wife of a Philip Berre (or Barre, Berrer, Bairee, Berry, etc.) being "transported" into Somerset County, MD along with daughters Elizabeth Berrer, Margaret Ivery and Mary Ivery, in 1662.
Philip and Olive had one more daughter together, "Grisigon", b. 7 Aug 1664, Manokin, Somerset Co MD, and she seems to have behaved herself (as far as we know).
For once the Miles Files do not give the whole picture - this was pieced together from various sources.
