About Oliver Beckwith

Oliver Beckwith, son of Levi and Caroline Beckwith. He married with MARY JOSEPHINE CRANE on Dec. 25, 1865. She was dau. of James Harvey Crane and Abiel Reed. She was born June 16, 1844 in Moriah, Essex Co., New York. He was born in Coshocton Co., Ohio on Aug. 28, 1840. She d. June 11, 1917 in Humboldt, Humboldt Co., Iowa; he d. Nov. 7, 1932 in Park Rapids, Hubbard Co., Minnesota. Both buried at Union Cemetert, Humboldt, Humboldt Co., Iowa.

Children were: Hattie E. (1867), Loyal W.(1869), Bertha A. (1872), and Cora E. (1880)..

HUMBOLDT INDEPENDENT: Sept. 22, 1931: Mr. Oliver Beckwith was a visitor in the Dakota City schools last Thursday afternoon. He related some of his experiences during the Civil War. Mr. Beckwith was a member of Company A., Ninth Iowa Infantry which was organized at Maquoketa where he enlisted and he is the last surviving member of his regimant which numbered 1303 soldiers. Mrs. Meckwith was born in 1840 and last month observed his 91st birthday. The studnets listened with much interest as Mr. Beckwith told them of certain battles in which he fought.

HUMBOLDT REPUBLICAN: Nov. 1, 1932. Funeral services for Oliver Beckwith, Civil War veteran, who died at Park Rapids, Minnesota, Monday, were held at the Ellsworth funeral home Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. Thomas Lutman, pastor of the service and interment was made in the Union Cemetery. Mr. Beckwith died at the home of his daughter Bertha Katman of Park Rapids Monday at the age of 92 years. He was an old settler of Humboldt county having left here some 15 year ago after the death of his wife, after having made his home here for 50 years.

Mr. Beckwith was born in Coshocton county, Illinois on Aug. 28, 1840. On Dec. 25, 1865, he was united in marriage with Mary Josephine Crane of Maquoketa. They came to live on a farm near LuVerue where they resided until 30 years ago when they moved to Humboldt. In 1917 Mrs. Beckwith died here.

Four children survive to mourn his death, Mrs. Bertha Katman and Cora Blazer of Park Rapids, Minn., Mrs. Hattie Willey of Algona, and L.W. Beckwith of Cedar Falls. During the Civil War Mr. Beckwith served for four years in company A., 9th Iowa.
