According to the local paper*, Oran was drafted-against his will-into the Confederate army while in the South:

"His opposition was so strong to fighting against the Union forces, with whom he was in sympathy, that influential friends obtained his exemption. This influence held away for over two years when he was finally placed in the army service.

"Only a few nights after arriving at the front, the Fitchburg man was placed on picket duty, and the opportunity to escape for which he had waited presented itself. He found his way through the Union lines, went to Washington and was granted a pass to Fitchburg. His health was so poor on account of the experiences through which he had passed that he was not obliged to serve with the Union forces." ________________

Oran was the son of Joseph & Susan (Balcom), born at Ashburnham, res. at Fitchburg.

He married Emma F Pratt Nov. 12, 1868 at Free Church, Boston. (Intentions and marriage filed at Sterling, MA.)

He died Aug 6, 1901 of heart disease, age 67-10-12. ________________

Oran was a member of the Aurora lodge of Masons, initiated in June, 1858.
