About Oscar Clifton Robbins

Oscar played the violin, and his brother Chris played the guitar at dances Saturday nights in Westfield. His size and strength served him well working on bridges, carrying large timbers and wheelbarrows of concrete. His WW1 draft registration described him as "Tall and stout- with gray eyes and brown hair." Oscar, being a farmer , Raised hogs and chickens. He prided himself in raising prize-winning Poland China Hogs and White Rock chickens that won numerous ribbons at the Indiana State Fair. These ribbons were kept in the family Bible. He worked from dawn to dark most days but Sundays. He told of being gored by a boar hog in the leg, leaving a large gash in his upper leg. He bandaged it, bled a great deal, but did not see a doctor. His older brother William was killed in a farm accident in July of 1900, the horses bolted throwing him in front of the binder, Oscar felt partially responsible because he was tending other horses and was not able to help William. He is buried in the Garden of Memory Cemetery.
