Houghton County Mine Inspectors Report

Accident 14. Occurred July 1. - Otto Murto while working with a timber gang in the 34th level south of No. 2 shaft Hecla branch of the Calumet and Hecla mine was fatally injured by a fall of hanging wall rock.

Over where the men were at work the hanging was solid and thought to be safe but about fifteen feet north a piece of vein rock fell and a large rock rolled to where Murto was at work striking him on the small of his back. At the time he was not considered dangerously injured and requested to be taken to his boarding place rather than to the mine hospital. After reaching his boarding house he walked to his room and slept most of the afternoon. His injuries however must have been worse than he thought. He died about 8 o'clock the same evening.

Onnettomuus nro 14 sattui 1. heinäkuuta. Otto Murto loukkaantui kuolettavasti malmikivilohkareen pudotessa hänen työskennellessään timpuriryhmässä Calumet and Hacla -yhtiön Hecla-kaivoksen tasolla 34, etelään kuilusta nro 2.

Työskentelevien miesten yläpuolella ollutta malmikivikalliota pidettiin kiinteänä ja sen katsottiin olevan turvallinen, mutta noin 15 jalkaa pohjoiseen palanen malmisuonta putosi, ja iso lohkare kieri sinne missä Murto oli työssä iskien häntä alaselkään. Hänen ei ensin arveltu loukkaantuneen pahoin ja hänet pyydettiin viemään kaivoksen sairaalan sijaan omaan majapaikkaansa. Asumukseen päästyään hän käveli omaan huoneeseensa ja nukkui suurimman osan iltapäivää. Hänen vammojensa oli kuitenkin täytynyt olla pahemmat kuin hän luuli. Hän kuoli samana iltana noin kello 8.
