American Hero George Richmond Bailey was born 14 June 14 1921 in Santa Monica California and attended Santa Monica High School and Loyola High Schools
The 1930 Census showed him living with an aunt and uncle in Santa Monica. He was in Santa Monica in 1940, living with his mother, Rose Carroll Bailey, and brother John "Jack" Bailey. Rose was working for the Works Progress Administration, a Depression-era federal jobs program, and George was a construction laborer.
In the summer shortly after graduating from Santa Monica High, George joined the U.S. Marines and was a Private 1st Class and flag orderly by the time he was murdered on 7 December 1941 by a sneak attack of the Imperial Japanese military in Pearl Harbor where he served aboard the illustrious U.S.S. Arizona. His body was recovered and is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
Mr. Bailey's brother, known as Jack, bravely enlisted in the Marines 15 days later. He survived the war.
