About Pappy Rees Gallagher Engel
Len was thought to have been born in Achim Germany in 1920. Mysteriously he landed in NY and was brought up in Brooklyn, NY. Somehow his military record has Washington DC as birth place. Of course there is no record of such. He attended Aviation high school and enlisted in US Coast Guard in 1939. He was promoted to Chief at age of 21 and before four years of service. He left service in 1950 to become a teacher of diesel mechanics for Hilo Technical School in Hawaii and then Thomlinson Technical in St. Petersburg, Fl. A re-enlistment into the Coast Guard found him retiring as a Chief Warrent Officer (Machinest). Not good with retirement he went to school and became a Health Physics Technician Contractor working in radiation control at Nuclear Power Plants until later retiring in 1993. He earned two battle stars for sinking submarines off coast of New England during WWII.
