About Patience Mincy Norton

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Harrelson-500

Patience Minsey Harrelson was born about 1755 in South Carolina. She was the daughter of Benjamin Harrelson and Cealey Smith. Nortonfamily.net has Patience's birth as 1759 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

She married William Norton, Jr. (1755-60 - 1806), the son of William Norton (1739-___) and Famariah Atkinson Miller (1740-1854).

According to her husband's will, Patience and William had six children: Lewis Norton, Mary Norton, William Norton, James Norton, Ruth Norton and John Norton. They lived in Horry County or District at that time in South Carolina. William had inherited a portion of his father's 3390 acres that his father received in a grant 4 June 1792. In turn Patience's William, gave his wife & children a portion in his will, ie,Patience got the house and 400 acres which John receives upon her death, Lewis - 350 acres, James - 550 acres, Ruth - 412 acres, plus 216 acres. Mary received $10, while William received $5. A 400-acre tract near the house was sold and each of the children received some money from the sale after expenses were paid.

William Norton Jr., moved to Balbour County, Alabama and took his mother, Patience with him.

Patience died 1833 in Barbour County, Alabama. She is believed to have been laid to rest in Providence Cemetery, Barbour County, Alabama. [1]

Research Notes

Note that her findagrave memorial lists the name Minsey while the DAR lists it as Mincy. The name has been suggested as a nickname or middle name but also as her first husband's last name. Miller has also been suggested as her first husband's last name, but we know that was the last name of her mother in law's first husband (Farmariah Atkinson Miller Norton).

The families of Norton, Lewis, Miller and Harrelson all seem to be connected. In my research I've discovered that William Norton and his father are referenced as the other in some sources making sorting them a little more difficult. I am trying to find the actual Will of both men thinking that will clarify any discrepancies.
