About Patrick Henry Martin

Curator Note:
Patrick Henry Martin exists only through the extension of logic and secondary sources. The following statements can be found…

Patrick Henry Martin, logically because it is known that Joseph Martin was a personal friend of Patrick Henry. He I s mentioned in the Weeks article as “ Patrick Henry was taken to Tennessee by his half brother Brice and was educated by William and Brice; he studied law and went to the bar about the beginning of the war of 1812. But be left this to join Jackson's army; was with him nearly the whole time and died after his return from New Orleans.” (1)

There is a note in the collaboration section on FamilySearch that reads “ History of Patrick and Henry Counties, VA, Prominent Families' p 193: " . . . Patrick Henry MARTIN was taken to Tennessee by his half-brothers, Brice and William Jr., and educated. He studied law and began practicing about 1812, served in Jackson's Army and died after returning from New Orleans in 1814."(2)

This would make Patrick Henry a son of Brigadier General Joseph Martin and his 3rd and last wife Susannah Martin (Graves) since we know the Joseph had by his first wife Sarah Martin (Lucas) sons named William and Brice.

Further, from the online research database JOHN GRAVES/GREAVES OF NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, ENGLAND & VIRGINIA we have a list of the children of Susannah Graves thusly which identifies Patrick Henry as a child: (3)

Susannah Graves (131) was born about 1763, and died 9 March 1837 in Henry Co., VA. She married General Joseph Martin, Jr., son of Joseph Martin, Sr. and Susannah Chiles, on 24 Feb. 1784 in Henry Co., VA. He was born 18 Sept. 1740 in Albemarle Co., VA, died 18 Dec. 1808 in Henry Co., VA, and was buried at "Bell Monte" on Leatherwood Creek, Henry Co. Susannah was Joseph's third wife. He first married Sarah Lucas in 1762. Sarah died 17 March 1782 in Henry Co., Va. Children by this marriage were Susannah, b. 1763, m. Jacob Burns, d. 1844; Col. William, b. 1765, m. - Donelson, d. 1846; Elizabeth, m. Carr Waller, d. 1805; Brice, b. 1770, m. Malinda Perkins, d. 1856; Polly, m. Daniel Hammock; Martha, m. William Cleveland; Nancy, m. Aichilus Hughes. After his appointment as Indian Commissioner (while his first wife was living) Joseph married Elizabeth Ward, a Cherokee princess (probably half Indian), and had children James, b. 1781, and Nannie. He was still her husband in 1800. His Indian name was Gulkalu or Longknife. Both his white wives knew of the Indian one. According to R-259, he married Mary Emory as his fourth wife. All the children of Susannah and Joseph were born in Henry Co., VA. (R-8, R-317)

By a preponderance of “statements” (no evidence provided) from other tertiary sources he seems to have been born 1791-1792 and died on his way home after serving with General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans which we know took place on Jan. 8, 1815, making Patrick Henry about 26-27 years old. There are stories that Patrick Henry died on his return from New Orleans c. 1822-1824, but no reasons for his being there at that time are provided. Gen Jackson went on to fight the Seminole Indians in Florida after New Orleans and was there until about 1822-1824 when he ran for President. So much of this timeline doesn’t make sense after 1815.

There is no mention of a wife or children anywhere, and no proof of his parentage either. Patrick Henry Martin existed as a profile and son of Brigadier General Joseph Martin and Susannah Graves by virtue of the statements in the cited sources.
