Patrick Riley and Julia Grace Carr met in Spokane, where her widowed mother ran the commissary for the railroads, by whom he was employed, according to family history. Julia Grace was at the time of their marriage a cashier. We were told (we, her grandchildren, children of Edward) that she was an accomplished musician and played in a musical group. She was a normal school graduate and evidently had been unable to marry the man she truly loved. She was 28 at the time of her marriage, tho, following the custom of women, admitted Only to being 23. Their marriage certificate states that she was the daughter of Patrick Carr, born in Ireland, and Mary Conniff, born in Ireland, while she was born in Cleveland. Patrick Riley was born in Wisconsin and listed his occupation at the time of his marriage as a mechanic.

In Spokane City Directory in 1917, the Rileys were living in Spokane, and Patrick is listed as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Riley Candy Co., living with his wife Grace at E315 Sinto, Spokane.

Oakland City Directory (Researched at Sutro Library, S.F. Edward's father Patrick Riley was the first of his family to come out to the coast from Wisconsin ; next came his brother, his sister, and his mother and father in their late ages. He was a train fireman, shoveling coal to make the train run. He decided that was not the job for him. For awhile when Ed was little his father was running UncleT.J's candy store(Terrence, or T.J.), making chocolates, etc. They had moved out of Spokane, then back to Spokane, perhaps because he was out of work. Then he went back to his old work. Came to California in 1917 or 1918. The war started and he was back in the Oil pipeline field. Then he came down to the shipyards in S.F. and he was head of all the boilermakers in the shipyards. They lived someplace in downtown Oakland first, then out to East Oakland, perhaps in Fruitvale (76th ave) Evidently next they moved to Redwood City, then to Piedmont, then to San Jose. They owned the house on Nash Drive in Piedmont, Edward remembers his mother as a frail, quiet woman. She was there when he cut his thumb off. She got him on the kitchen table when the doctor (who was a woman) got the bone out of the end of his thumb and sewed him up. Patrick's heart attack was unexpected. He had just recovered from the flu. They had a rush job at the boiler works for a cannery at Mountain View. He went down on a Friday night, coming home at midnight, and that night he died. Not much closeness between the boys and Grace. Two or three years later they found out that the cannery in Mountain View only canned carrots. That turned out to be owned by Ed's wife Peggy's first cousin, another Craig boy. (Bob)
