I won a Global AWARD!

The medal and certificate I won for 100HA recently arrived in the mail, with a book celibrating John Dobsons' 90th birthday (one of my pics of him in the book) and some DVD's. It's nice to be honoured by the global astro community (UNESCO, IAU, AWB and SA) in this way for community outreach activity. I was 'Highly Commended' in the 'Most Outstanding Individual' section for running broad and record winning events in April this year, as part of the IYA2009 (International Year of Astronomy).

The 'Horowhenua Chronicle' just put our image on the front page of the newspaper, about 30% of the page, and an article about us for about 50% of the page. circulation 2661 readership 6000.[1]

It's quite amusing to read about myself in this way, and when i put 'Levin Stargazers' into google i see my name pop up on dozens of sites in relation to the two IYA awards we received from the 100 Hours of Astronomy task group. Firstly, the Levin Stargazers WON the 'Community Outreach' award and secondly I received a 'Highly Commended' for the 'Most Outstanding individual'. The awards are to be acknowledged in Rio De Janeiro at the next IYA2009 conference, where my Levin Stargazers image takes pride of place in the centre of an A1 poster about NZ astronomy. (July 31st 2009.)

Dominion Post called me 'Renaissance Man' (August 2007) and D-Scene called us 'Star Men', (October 2008) Asia Downunder called me an 'astronomer and videographer' and my friends and I 'these three artists' (April 2009).

I'm a DOP (Director of Photography) My work is showing on TV3 NIGHTLINE as part of the footage for the New Zealand paint party Illuminate. the footage is from myself and my crew of camera operators. TV3 created a montage of Buzz Aldrin, Snoop Dog and a clip from my footage, and that was their background to enter/exit the story. (The clip aired on the 40th anniversary of the first moonwalk). ref [2]

I'm an artist.

STARS - the performance installation by Warwick Blair played at Galatos for 24 hours featuring the music of Warwick Blair, the singing of Arpita Chanda, and the six screens of pure sky films by Paul Moss.

ref: [3] The largest television network in New Zealand broadcast a documentary 'The Sound of the Skies' about my work with two other artists, Warwick Blair and Arpita Chanda, featuring my visuals. It went to air at 10:30am Sunday, 14th June 2009. The documentary was Episode 16 made by Asia Vision Ltd for Asia Downunder, and funded by New Zealand On Air. The programme repeats on many channels across New Zealand, and is also available for viewing and download at http://tvnz.co.nz/asia-downunder and www.youtube.com.[4] quote: "We check out Stars, a 24hr performance installation, music composed by Warwick Blair with live vocals by award winning singer Arpita Chanda. The IAU / UNESCO conference in Rio De Janero has an A1 poster featuring a wide range of New Zealand astronomers and astronomy related activity images. I managed to get two of my images on that poster, in the central area, and quite prominent. The poster is being printed and sent to every school in New Zealand.

I'm an astronomer, I recently mobilised over 1300 people to lookt hrough a telescope in one day, a New Zealand record, as part of a world record, reported in multiple sources. [14] and here [15]. I'm an illustrator I illustrated Astronomy Aotearoa book which one the NZ BPA best design award, 2008. [17] award report here [18]

The media said "The book teaches the history of Western Science. There is emphasis on leading figures such as Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Scientists appear as people along with an introduction to their theories. In all cases the book seeks to make science accessible to students of all abilities. The book features the work of many New Zealand photographers including Wellingtonian Paul Moss.
