  • Who exactly were Paul Oppel and his wife Johanna Christina Gottschalk within the Cape Town community? (They are in the 1807 Census of the Free Black Community and are said to be both alternatively "van de Caap" acc. to their marriage certificate.)
  • Was Paul the son of Bernhard Oppel? If not (appears more likely, as no baptism record has been found for a "Paul Oppel"), what was his background? How did he come to get this surname? (Same question about Johanna's surname)
