Occupation: director in a Brewery

Based on information provided by Christian Springer at brautopo@gmx.at, fifteen year old Paul Pick started working at St. Marx Brewery (Vienna) mid January 1886. According to his daughter, Irene Beck, Paul started as a delivery carriage driver and often took, Viktor Mautner-Markhof, son of owner, Karl Ferdinand Mautner-Markhof, with him on his delivery trips. According to Irene Beck, Karl was very strict with his son but with Paul, Viktor had a good time. Christian Springer points out that Viktor was still under his father’s guardianship at age 26 (1891). In 1891, Viktor inherited the brewery from his father, and in 1911, Paul Pick became one of 3 Directors for the St. Marx Brewery with a joint Power of Attorney. In 1913, the St. Marx Brewery was merged with Vereinigte Brauereien Schwechat under Management of Anton Dreher Jr. and Paul Pick promoted as one of the Directors, responsible for the production of 200 million liters of beer per year; compare this to 80 million liters per year today. Interestingly, the Mautner-Markhof assumed ownership of the brewery again in 1935.
