About Penelope (Peenels 1 of 3) Buckland
Notes taken from a book I read (now out of print) about the Buckland Gypsies
Richard Roberts(640) X Catherine Hazard(646) known eleven children including: Ann 'Nancy' Roberts(46) X John Shipton Buckland(45) John Roberts(70) X Rosetta 'Ettie'Buckland(69)
Thomas Hazard X Elizabeth ? known seven children including: Catherine Hazard X Richard Roberts(640) Richard Roberts had at least two sisters, Sarah Roberts (christened at Longworth, Wiltshire in 1815), and Penelope/Peenells Roberts, the previously mentioned wife of Timothy Tumit Buckland. To add even more complication, John Robert's sister Ann 'Nancy' Roberts was the wife of Ettie's uncle John Shipton Buckland (as previously mentioned), which made his sister his own and his wife's aunt, and Ettie's uncle John Shipton her own brother-in-law.
Family relationships like this were very common with travelling families. Rather like the song 'He's His Own Grandpa', if John Robert's sister was his own aunt, technically - though not biologically - he was his Qwn uncle; if he was his own uncle, his father was his brother, his mother his sister-in-law, and his grandfather and grandmother his father and mother. In fact, John Robert's actual grandfather was Richard RobertslRobinson and his grandmother was Alice Williams(643) (christened 1785, at Chievely, Berkshire) - they were married at Steventon, Oxfordshire in 1810.
