About Penelope Wharton (Johnson)
Eliza Penelope Johnson WHARTON, daughter of David JOHNSON and Barbara Asbury HERNDON, was born about 1828 in South Carolina. David JOHNSON was a lawyer and practiced at the Union County Courthouse in South Carolina. David was a representative in the SC state legislature in 1812, circuit judge 1815-1824, judge of the Court of Appeals 1824-1835, chancellor 1835-1849 and Governor of South Carolina 1846-1848. Penolope's mother died in 1838 and father in 1855.
Penelope married John Austin WHARTON, son of William Harris WHARTON and Sarah Ann GROCE, about 1848. Sarah Ann Groce WHARTON was the daughter of Old 300 colonist Jared E. GROCE. Penelope and John had two daughters, Sarah Ann Wharton who died in infancy, and Kate Ross Wharton.
Major General John Austin WHARTON died in 1865 and is buried in the State Cemetery in Austin. Penelope lived with her mother-in-law the remainder of her life.
