About Jens Peter Benson

Jens was an active participant in establishing the town of Newton. He helped lay out the town of Newton, build homes and out- buildings, dug irrigation ditches, helped plan and build the Newton Reservoir, farmed, and served in two of the earlier bishoprics of the Newton Ward. Over the years he had four wives and twenty three children. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Peter was born in Denmark in 1831. His family joined the LDS Church and emigrated in 1852. Traveling by rail, ship, steamboat, covered wagon and on foot, Peter along with his parents and sister, Christina, came to Utah. They lived in Lehi during the occupation of Johnston's army. He was a carpenter, stonemason, and wheelwright and, as such, found work at the army post. He helped with the building of Lehi and Salt Lake City. He worked on the building of the Salt Lake Tabernacle and then again thirty years later when it was in need of repairs. It was then when he found his hammer in the roof area of the tabernacle. It had been missing for thirty years! He moved his family to Clarkston where they pioneered that community, and from there to Newton where they stayed the rest of their lives. His wives, Mette, Kirsten, and Christiana each lived in Newton. Peter died in 1898 from injuries he received from falling off a roof.
