Peter Hitt and Sarah James
Our ancestor, Peter Hitt married Sarah James April 27, 1759. Sarah was born in about 1740, the daughter of John James and his wife Dinah (Allen) James of Fauquier County. Peter and Sarah had nine known children. Peter Hitt kept an ordinary or general store in Fauquier County, and his account book is still extant. The original is in the Warrenton Library, but a photostatic copy is in the library of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society at the University of Richmond. It indicates that he was a prominent member of Carter's Run Baptist Church. Most of the records, in which he apparently mingled contributions to the church with his own accounts at the store, appear to be from the 1770's and 1780's, though a few are earlier. Joseph Hitt and Henry Hitt are mentioned in the accounts (apparently his brothers); also "A. Holtzclaw" (apparently his son-in-law, Archibald Holtzclaw, b. 1764) and Daniel Bennett (Archibald's uncle-in-law, who married Mary Holtzclaw). An interesting entry is: Paid Sister Holtzclaw 11 Dollars I received of Brother Porter." "Sister Holtzclaw" was almost certainly Caty or Catherin Holtzclaw, mother of Archibald and widow of Joseph Holtzclaw, whose maiden name was Caty James. The parentage of Caty James Holtzclaw has long been a puzzle, and this entry at first seemed to indicate that she was a sister of Peter Hitt's wife and a daughter of John James, in spite of the fact that she is not mentioned in John's will. However, "Brother Porter" seems to be identical with Samuel Porter who married Eve, daughter of Tilman Weaver; so he could hardly been a brother-in-law of Peter Hitt. "Sister" and "Brother" were probably used here, then not to show relationship but because they were both members of Carter's Run Baptist Church. According to the old Baptist custom, fellow church members addressed one another as Sister and Brother.
Peter Hitt died in 1810 in Fauguier County, Virginia.

Same, p. 169. The division of Peter Hitt's land into 10 parts among his widow and offspring. No names mentioned, but this shows that there were nine children. His wife, Sarah (James) Hitt lived until 1822, when she died, also in Fauquier County.
