Biography

Peter Jenkins was born about 1649 in Massachusetts Bay colony.

In 1660 a Sarah Jenkins, age 43, was recorded in Rowley Village, Essex County, Massachusetts, who was presumably his mother.

In 1668 he was indicted in Rowley Village, Essex County, Massachusetts for Labouring about Bricke on Sunday (the Lords day). Peter did have a clay pit on his property on Martha's Vineyard.

On 01 May 1672 Phebe Redingtion gave a deposition describing a fairly intoxicated stupor of Peter Ginkens [i.e. Jenkins who was admonished by the court for what appears to have been drunkenness]. [1]

It is asserted this is the same Peter Jenkins who first appears in Edgartown, Dukes County, New York Colony before 1675 when his landed possessions were recorded.

He led a "strenuous life with unconventional habits" in both locations which resulted in like judicial cognizance.

His wife was named Sarah, but nothing is further known of her family, though it is a fair guess that she was the daughter of Thomas Jones, whose property Peter received in consideration of care and support.

He was mentioned in the records of Edgartown, Dukes County, New York Colony until 1687.

No record of his death, his wife's, nor settlement of his estate exists. On 18 Aug 1707 his house and lot were divided between his son Thomas and Thomas Harlock.

His son Matthew eventually settled on Nantucket, son Thomas settled in Boston, Massachusetts, and son Joseph settled on Martha's Vineyard.
