Two guys fell down together in a foxhole during WWI, Pete was one of them, they waited until dark then the other guy thought it would be safe to stick his head out to look and was killed immediately.

"Mr. Peter G. Ries Answers Summons
War Veteran of First World War and Brother of Laurence and Lena Ries.
Mr. Peter G. Ries, former resident of New Vienna vicinity, late ofDubuque and brother o f Laurence and Miss Lena Ries of Dyersville, died athis home in Dubuque Friday afternoon afte r a lingering illness.
Deceased was born in New Vienna on January 7, 1887, and he grew toyoung manhood in tha t vincinity. He followed the pursuits of farminguntil the year 1918, when he entered the ser vice of Uncle Sam, in theFirst World War, on July 26, 1918, and was wounded on Nov 8, the sam eyear, at St. Mihiel in France. He was honorably discharged in March 1919and returned home . On October 21, 1919, he was united in marriage to MissEdna Ehlers, and after their marriag e settled down to housekeeping on afarm and he continued the pursuits of farming until a fe w years ago, whenhe retired and moved to Dubuque.
Survivors are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Ray (Mildred) Hirsch,Arlene and Martha Jan e Ries, and on son, Glenn ries, all of Dubuque;three sisters, Miss Lena Ries, Dyersville; Mrs . Anton (Susan] Maiers, NewVienna; and Mrs. Herman (Marie Luekan), Guttenberg; four brothers, John Aand Thomas J. Ries, New Vienna; Anthony Ries, Holy Cross, and LawrenceRies, Dyersvill e; also three grandchildren.
The funeral took place Monday morning from the Haudenschied funeralhome to Holy Ghost ch urch, where Requiem High Mass was sung for therepose of his soul, after which interment was m ade in Mount Calvarycemetery. Military honors were accorded at the cemetary
