About Peter Zimmerman, Jr.
Memory of Paula Koch: Grandpa Peter Zimmerman was from a very large and poor family. He immigrated to America with his sister (McDonald). He was a stone mason and travelled around northern Wisconsin building railroad bridges. This left Josephine home alone for months at a time caring for Gladys, Albert, Leona, and ‘Nick’.
He was a stem old German who refused to attend the wedding of Gladys to an Irishman, John J. Maxwell. There was a story of animosity between Germans and Irish in Menominee. Apparently in a previous generation, a German priest was gunned down during mass while saying Sunday mass by an Irishman. The wound in the German/Irish community remained an unabridged chasm.
