About Phebe Barker

Each of Phebe's three husbands at some time was involved with keeping the ferry which ran between Jamestown and Newport, Rhode Island; it has been suggested that Phebe herself was the ferry keeper. The idea is supported by an entry in the Jamestown Council records dated 15 May 1711, when Peter Parker "desires ye counsell would be pleased to grant him a license for one year for he has taken his ant barkers boat and ferry house on ye east side....".

On April 8, 1712 Mrs. Phebe Barker was the only woman officially present at a meeting of the Proprietors at the house of Joseph Morey in Jamestown, and at a meeting held 19 May 1712 it was noted that Phebe Barker had drawn 20 lots in the right of her son Oliver Arnold.

The gravestone of Phebe and Oliver Arnold and their son Oliver Jr., today (1987) stand in Cedar Cemetery, Jamestown, Rhode Island, moved from Canonicut Island.
