The 1851 census records that Phillip was a farmer of 186 acres, employing 6 men, 2 women and 4 boys, at Crofton, Great Bedwyn. In 1861 Philip was a farmer of 40 acres in Great Bedwyn, expanding to 80 acres in 1871, but by 1881 this had reduced to a mere 5 acres and they lived in Crofton village.
