Notes

  1. almost certainly NOT a Quaker, apparently left over from the days--before Y-DNA testing--when some of the descendants thought this family was related to the English Quaker heritage Houghs. And from an old DAR application by someone who, it turned out, wasn't even a descendant of this Philip, but apparently she decided that he must have been a Quaker.
  2. Granville's notes state that Philip Hoff from Rotterdam was a different man.
  3. Feb Court 1823: Mongomery Co VA Court Records book 3, p. 484: Will of Philip Huff. Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of us this 25th day of July 1822. Phillip (X) Huff (Seal); witnesses: Benjamin Reed, Henry Shockey, Peter Dewese.
  4. As a Quaker, [SIC] Philip Huff, was exempt from armed participation in any kind of war; but he was permitted by the tenents of his faith to give non-combative support, which he chose to do. He supplied food, horses, wagons & drivers (often himself) for the Continental Troops. His name is listed in THE PATRIOT INDEX of the DAR with the designation "PS" (public service). From DAR records and personal description by Helen Boston Cooper.
  5. Granville Hough: "There must have been another early Huff or Hoff family passing through [Wayne Co KY]. Some of these used Dutch given names: Delemaris; Cemecus; Deadamica; Tunulia; Tilemaus. I suspect this was a Hoff family of PA or NJ origin who wound up in the area."
  6. Ferguson, Jack. "Early Times in Clinton Co KY," Vol I, p 124, reads: "The Huff brothers--Daniel, Philip and William--were early settlers in this territory. According to the 1799 list Daniel had 200 acres and William 100 acres, both on ?Spring Creek."
  7. He may have been related to Benjamin Huff who had children born in Montgomery VA that were allied with the Vanmeters, Ishams, Renfros and Reeds. (3)
