Note: Reported by Philip Gerchman By the age of 15, Philip Gerchman was working in the coal mines of Forest City. He was employed by the following coal mine companies: Pennsylvania Coal & Iron Company, also known as Hillside Coal & Iron Company from 1924-1932, Pittson Coal Company from 1932-1938, Delware Hudson Coal Company, also known as Doff Coal Company from 1932-1938, and the Volpe Coal Company from 1932-1942. As a coal miner, he drilled holes and stood up props, blasted out coal, loaded coal onto cars. His salary depended on the tonnages loaded. In ana eight hour day, he loaded between 15 to 20 tons of coal, receiving fifty cents for each ton loaded. His work week was sporadic and unpredictable, hardly ever a forty hour work week.

Family Note: After their marriage, Philip and Martha Gerchman resided at 707 Susquehanna St., Forest City, PA. In the early 1940's, they moved in with Martha Gerchman's mother, Mary Divjak Nograsek as she could not longer care for herself. On February 10, 1945, Philip and Martha Gerchman purchased Mary Divjak Nograsek home, at 333 Main St., Browndale, PA, for the sum of ($700) seven hundred dollars. In 1947, Philip Gerchman was employed by International Business Corporation (IBM), Endicott, NY, as a tool maker. Twice a week he would travel back and forth from Endicott, NY to Browndale, PA, a distance of over 60 miles. On July 20, 1948, Philip and Martha Gerchman purchased a home at 90 Bernice St., Johnson City, NY. When Philip and Martha Gerchman relocated, her mother moved in with her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Mikulak, of Browndale, PA.
Binghamton Press:1981 Man wounds hunter: William Russell, 35, of 11 Calgary Lane, Binghamton, NY, was arrested by the State Police of Kirkwood yesterday, and charged with accidentally shooting a fellow hunter in the leg. Russell was charged with second degree assault, a felony, for allegedly shooting Mr Philip Gerchman, 73, of Johnson City, NY, at 9:15 AM, on the Deer Lake Association property of Country Route 315, in the town of Sanford. Police said that Russell thought he saw a deer and fired one shot into the brush with a 30-30 Winchester rifle, striking Philip Gerchman in the lower right leg. Mr. Gerchman underwent surgery yesterday at Our Lady of the Lourdes Hospital and was listed in serious condition last night. Russell was arraigned in the townw of Windsor court and released on the recommendation of the Broome County District Attorney's Office.
