About Phoebe Snetsinger
Phoebe Snetsinger, née Burnett (June 9, 1931 – November 23, 1999), born and raised in Lake Zurich, Illinois, then a resident of Webster Groves, Missouri, a suburb of Saint Louis with her husband and children, was an American birder famous for having seen over 8,398 species by the time of her death, at the time more than anyone else in history. She was married, had four children, of whom three followed her with a specific interests in birds. Her specialty in education was German language and literature; her first hobby was poetry. Once introduced to birding, she took it up thoroughly, becoming a sharp observer who kept detailed notes, blessed with an excellent memory and a strong competitive spirit. Though initially driven to join the competition of seeing the most birds by the diagnosis of a fatal disease (melanoma) she died in a vehicle accident while seeking birds, in Madagascar, about 18 years after the diagnosis.
