Piet Erasmus (1951 - 1998)

Brief overview:

Piet (46) and his wife, Anna Elizabeth Erasmus, were visiting their friends, Christoffel and Dina Buys on their farm Geluksrus, Middelrus, Mooi River, KZN on 30th July 1998, when the attack happened. They were having a fish braai (barbeque) in the evening, and standing in the kitchen when they heard a window break.

A man wearing a balaclava appeared in the doorway and started shooting wildly. Piet was shot dead, and Dina Carolina Jacoba Catharina Buys shot in the head and making gurgling sounds. Anna dived behind a small cupboard.

Another man entered, whose face was not covered, who spoke fluent English, pulled Anna Erasmus to her feet and forced her to accompany him. He pointed his handgun at her from an arm's length away and pulled the trigger several times. The gun did not fire. He made her give him her car keys, took a cellphone and her wristwatch and tried to get her rings off her finger but she clenched her fist. He demanded to know where the owner of the house was and where the safe keys were, but she replied that she did not know.

The attacker forced a resisting Anna, fearing she was going to be raped, on to the veranda.

All of a sudden the perpetrator fled. Christoffel Buys had raised the alarm. Dina Buys died in the ambulance on the way to hospital.

No follow-up on this case has been reported on.

  • Two Weenen men, Xolani Mkhize (22), and Mchazaleni Mkhize (25) were arrested by the Greytown Murder and Robbery Unit in August 2000. They appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on charges of murder, attempted murder, housebreaking and robbery. Both pleaded not guilty.
