About Pieter Daniel de Villiers, a3b5c4d5e1f1

Anglo Boere Oorlog Latere Kommandant

My grandfather (Jacob de Villiers Dorey) told me many stories of his grandfather Pieter Daniel de Villiers. The one I remember most vividly is that, while on a hunt, he bet his fellow hunters that he would pull a hair from the back of a live rhino. He approached the rhino very cautiously from the down-wind direction, plucked a hair from the rhino's back, and snuck away safely, again down-wind. How's that for bravery? Or just a matter of more guts than brains?

"Initially the Sabie River area was known as an excellent hunting area, and was used as a rest camp by game hunters and prospectors. The name "Sabie" is derived for "Sabielala", which means "Sabie, the resting place", or from "Saba", meaning fear. The Sotho’s and Swazi's in the area gave this name to the river because they feared the spirits of people who drowned there or whose bodies were thrown into the river during the continual wars that were waged, at that time. In 1846 the magistrate at Ohrigstad issued the first transport acts to P.J. Badenhorst of the farm "Grootvantijn". He sold the farm to P. de Villiers, who sold it in 1880 to H.T.Glynn (1856-1928), the founder of Sabie."
