About Polly Butler
In 1844, Polly's husband Joel, a farmer in Monson, passed away leaving her widowed with 4 children. The census of 1850 shows them still living in Monson, with the oldest working at age 17 as an "Operative" (presumably operating machinery at a textile mill), and the others, aged 15, 11, and 8 in school. In 1854, daughter Laura dies at 19 from typhoid fever, and is buried in the Butler Road cemetery near her father. The Mass state census of 1855 shows Orrimill and Warren working in a woolen mill as "Carder and Laborer" at ages 22 and 16, while Dwight still attends school at 13. By 1865, the sons have all married. Dwight is off fighting in the civil war.. Massachusetts Census of 1865 during the Civil War shows Polly at age 63 living with her son Warren and his wife Lucina in Springfield ward 5, where Warren worked as an "Armorer", possibly at the Springfield Armory.
