BIOGRAPHY 

Popoe Sixtus IV, a curious, morally mangled creature, was gripped by an obsession to create an enduring dynasty. Few pontiffs illustrate the overriding paradox of the Renaissance so well. A genuinely pious and easthetic man, his reign produced works of artistic and architectural beauty, creating the foundations for the re-establishment of Rome as the eternal home of the Catholic Church. Yet at the same time an unprecedented climate of depravity and cruelty characterized the city. His own corruption decayed its moral heart.
